The No-B*llshit Guide to Medicine Applications
April 2022
I looked at my watch as I finally closed my laptop for the night. 2:21am. Alongside preparing for my Year 12 exams I had the clock ticking down to my UCAT exam. It seemed as everyday ticked closer to my exam, 70…69…68, my exams scores stayed the same, 2730…2750…2690…
I grabbed my phone from behind my laptop and saw a text message from my best friend:
10:59 - 1 New Message
Bro have you done your med applications?
... OH SHIT
- - - - - - - - - - - -
The process to get an offer to study medicine is much much harder than actually getting the application in. But as minor as it might seem, the process is super vague. There’s so many questions to answer:
Which unis can I apply for?
What are the deadlines?
What are the associated costs?
How do unis get my UCAT and ATAR?
When do I get results?
This is exactly what this guide aims to do. Answer all the questions above and more.
Understanding where you can apply
If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you are a domestic student, which if you’re not sure I’ve described below:
Australian Citizen
New Zealand Citizen
Australian Permanent Resident
Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa
(If you’re an International student, check out a more specific guide here)
In Australia, there are a total of 20 universities that offer medicine. However, you can only go straight from school into nine.
But why?
That’s because 9 universities offer medicine undergraduate (straight out of school) and 14 offer medicine postgraduate (after completing a bachelors degree first).
P.S. 14 + 9 is not in fact 20. That’s because Monash University, Bond and UNSW offers both an undergraduate and postgraduate pathway into medicine.
The 9 Universities and their application weighting & requirements are listed in this table below:
To confuse you even more, let’s introduce Provisional Courses. They are courses which provide a guaranteed spot in medicine, provided requirements are met. Most of them are a preliminary year of medical science, before commencing the medical course.
Let’s cut the bull… What does this mean for you?
If you want a comprehensive list of where to apply for all over Australia, it’s listed below. This list includes direct undergraduate courses and provisional undergraduate courses:
Direct Undergraduate Entry
University of New South Wales (UNSW)
University of Newcastle / University of New England (Joint Medical Program)
University of Western Sydney / Charles Sturt University
Adelaide University (name changed from University of Adelaide)
James Cook University
University of Tasmania
Curtin University
Monash University
Bond University
Provisional Undergraduate Entry
Griffith University - Bachelor of Medical Science
University of Queensland & Central Queensland University - Bachelor of Biomedical Science / Health Sciences
Flinders University - Bachelor of Clinical Sciences
Guaranteed Postgraduate Entry
University of Melbourne - Any Bachelor Degree
University of Sydney - Any Bachelor Degree
La Trobe University - Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Rural Entry)
This means you should be applying for 15 universities to maximise your chance of getting to study medicine in the fastest way possible.
That concludes Section 1 of this Guide. The next section go through filling in your application in the respective state admissions authorities.
Section 2
What is the state admissions authorities
When applying for university admission, there are two key ways that universities are able to get your results and applications:
Directly
Third-Party Organisations
If you’re still confused, these are organisations such as VTAC, USC, QTAC, SATAC, TISC, etc.
Below is the table of each of the relevant universities and where to apply:
From here, the process is quite well explained by the platforms. However, there are three key pieces of information you should always check you have entered when applying for medical school:
UCAT ANZ ID
Unique Student Identifier
State Student Number
These are the three numbers that allow the admissions platform to recognise who you are and your results. It is then their responsibility to check eligibility and then transfer them to the universities you’ve applied for
UCAT ANZ ID
This number is found in the top right hand corner of your Pearson VUE account. It should be in the format of ANZ12345678. This is how the UCAT ANZ Office provides it to the UCAT ANZ Consortium Universities.
Unique Student Identifier
This is your educational fingerprint. This national education reference number is linked to a log of all tertiary education courses you’ve completed. This is how they determine eligibility for the undergraduate pathway.
State Student Number
This number is how your school exam performance is linked to you. This is unique for states and provides information to universities about your ATAR. When you apply for interstate universities, your ATAR is requested internally and provided by your state’s Admission Centre.
If you submit at least the above 3 pieces of information, the Admissions Centre will find one way or another to get your information and application through to the universities. Of course, some things don’t apply for universities that aren’t part of the UCAT ANZ Consortium Universities (JCU, Bond)
Now the news you weren’t keen on hearing…
Since the Admissions Centres are third party organisations, they have full agency to be able to charge for their services independent of universities. The good news is that it’s a one-time fee for all universities in that state. The below table summarises it nicely:
That brings us to the end of Section 2, which discusses the logistics of setting up the admissions centre accounts. Section 3 is going to in depth of all the undergraduate medical programs offered, variations, pathways in, etc.
Section 3
This section is probably the most content intense, but organised quite nicely so you can keep coming back and referencing it for statistics, courses and special entry programs. For your convenience, I’ve linked all of the universities below so you can easily jump around:
University of New South Wales (UNSW)
